TSN/Kraft Celebration Tour

July 5, 2010

The Village of Gagetown was recently named as the only finalist from New Brunswick in the TSN/Kraft Celebration Tour. We have been partnered with Pictou, Nova Scotia, with the winner receiving $25,000 cash (which in our case would be used to upgrade the ice rink). Two other bonuses are the opportunity to be the location for a live TSN broadcast hosted by Jennifer Hedger and Darren Dutchyshen, and to have a big party, courtesy of Kraft. In order to win we need to have more on-line votes than Pictou.

The fact that the Village has a rink is truly an example of community effort. The Village secured the land, our military forces from Base Gagetown took the construction of the rink on as a community project, the Province awarded a grant to help towards the cost, high-efficiency lighting was donated, there were numerous fund-raising efforts on the part of the Recreation Council and their supporters to pay for the materials, and considerable skilled labour was donated by members of the community to provide the finishing touches. These local volunteers (again with the help of the rest of the community) then went on to construct a recreation building/changing facilities and storage shed. A children’s playground has since been added to the recreation site.

Unfortunately the rink surface is such that over the past two winters it has been very difficult to maintain the ice. A hard surface would help considerably in keeping the ice during the winter, and also extend the use of the facility to year-round with the possibility of having road hockey, basketball, tennis and other sports on the same surface. However funds are scarce and this $25,000 prize would change the dream of a hard surface to a reality.

We are the only New Brunswick community to have been selected as a finalist in this competition. With a population base of some 720 we will need the help of as many friends and supporters as possible (wherever they live) to win this prize. Details can be found by looking for “Gagetown Recreation Centre” at: http://kraftcelebrationtour.tsn.ca
Please note the voting schedule and register at least one vote in our favour. Remember that YOU CAN VOTE AS OFTEN AS YOU LIKE, so if you find yourself with a few spare moments JUST KEEP ON VOTING !
